小説『ウォールフラワー』でチャーリーがパトリックに読んだ詩について。
作中で主人公のチャーリーは大切な友達になったパトリックにクリスマスプレゼントとして詩を読む。
その詩がとても印象に残った。
昔、緑の線を引いた一枚の黄色い紙に
彼はひとつ詩を書いた。
そして『チョップス』と題をつけた。
それは彼が飼っていた犬の名前。
そして詩は、その犬の詩だった。
そして先生は彼にAをつけてくれた。
あと、金賞をくれた。
そして彼の母親はそれをキッチンのドアに貼ると
叔母さんに読んで聞かせた。
それはトレイシー神父が
子どもたちみんなを連れて動物園に行った年のこと。
そして神父はバスの中、子どもたちに唄わせた。
そして彼に妹が生まれた。
小さな足の爪と、まだつるつるの頭。
詩はもっと続く。
”そして・・・、そして・・”と続く子どもな好きそうな詩だけれど、進むにつれて深刻な内容になる。
集英社文庫版の謝辞にはこう書かれている。一部抜粋
そして最後に・・・
美しい詩を書いてくれたアール・ムール氏とそれを十四歳のころに間違えて覚えていたパトリック・コモーに。
どうやら元の詩があって、小説に載っているのはパトリック・コモー版ということらしい。
違いを知りたくなったので探した。

小説（原文）の詩から引用。全文はQuote by Stephen Chbosky: “Once on a yellow piece of paper with green line…”にあった。
小説中にはタイトルは出てこない。あとがきによるとタイトルは『A PERSON/ A PAPER/ A PROMISE REMEMBERED』。

he wrote a poem
And he called it “Chops”
because that was the name of his dog
And that’s what it was all about
And his teacher gave him an A
and a gold star
And his mother hung it on the kitchen door
and read it to his aunts

いきなり犬の名前が違う。
gave him a gold star のところは big が抜けている。こんな違いがいくつもある。

詩を覚えたつもりが、いつの間にか自分がいいと思うように変わっていることがある。本当に。
