英語の本を読むとき、難しすぎてお手上げだと思うことはないだろうか？
今読んでいる本が自分のレベルに合っているかどうかということは多読をする上で重要だ。
多読とはレベルが合った本をたくさん読むこと。
もちろん難しい本を時間を掛けて読むことも可能だが、多[時間]読より多[文章]読のほうが効率がいいだろう。
文章の読みやすさの指標
本の1ページに10個以上知らない単語が出てくると、非常に読みにくく意味が取れなくなるということを聞いたことがある。
たしかに1ページに10個も解らない単語が出てきたら心が折れそうだが、私の経験から言えば副詞の意味が解からなくても話として理解できる。逆に動詞は1個でも解らないと辛い。
1ページに10個の知らない副詞が出てくるより、動詞が2個解らないほうがストレスが溜まる。
英語の文章の読みやすさ、読んで理解ができているか、という尺度はいろいろある。
英語学習者用の本ならばLexile指数やTOEICのリーディングスコアで推奨の難易度がわかる。
けれども、本や文章に推奨されるの読解力の指標がない場合も多々ある。
文章の難易度を判定するReadable.io
目安となる指標が示されていないWEBサイトの文章などの難易度を測るために使えるサイトがある。

学年に対応しているFlesch-Kincaid Grade Levelや、Gunning fog index、Automated readability indexのスコアがわかりやすいと思う。

英文の読みやすさをテストする指標。
2つのコア指標（単語の長さと文章の長さ）を使用して読みやすさを測定する。
グレード・レベルの評価はアメリカ海軍のために開発された。

Robert Gunningによって開発された、ある文章を一度読んで理解するために必要な教育年数を見積もるテスト。
Fog指数が12の場合は、アメリカの高校生（18歳）のリーディングレベルが必要となる。

Lexile指数は、英語の読解力を客観的に測定するツールとして開発された指標で、英文に使われている単語数や難易度、構文の複雑さなどを総合的に数値化したもの。本の場合はその難易度を、人であれば「読む力」を示す。指数は「0L」から10刻みに上がり、難解な専門書は「2000L」を超える。アメリカでは教育現場で幅広く活用されているほか、世界165か国で使用されている。
